Triptych oil painting on canvas of the Pine Rest property. It depicts roads, trees, buildings as well as people and cars. There is a painted curtain frame and symbols on top of each section. The symbols include: fa lamp,a rod of Asclepius and an anchor. It is built in 3 sections that are connected with hinges. The backing is made of a burlap fabric.;This triptych was painted by artist Lumen Winter. Winter was born in Kansas, graduated from Union High School in 1926, and worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for the Grand Rapids Herald while attending Grand Rapids Junior College (now Grand Rapids Community College). After completing his work studies at J.C., Winter studied at the Cleveland School of Art, and the National Academy of Design in New York. In 1935, while he was still at the National Academy, Winter was commissioned by the Union High School Class of 1935 to paint a 6 foot x 32 ft long mural for the main foyer of the school. The mural remained in the school until 1993 when it was removed during building restoration and donated to the Museum. Winter would go on to become a well-known muralist. The exact date of this folding screen is not known but it probably dates from some time in during the 1920s or early 1930s. Pine Rest "lore" states that it was executed by Winter while he was a patient at Pine Rest as a young adult. It is very possible he also painted a triptych, that was also donated by Pine Rest, at the same time.;The items in this accession were donated to the Grand Rapids Public Museum following Pine Rest's 100th Anniversary. The staff and volunteers at Pine Rest gathered together hundreds of artifacts, documents, and photographs from their century-long history for the anniversary celebration in 2010. Following those events, Museum staff visited Pine Rest several times, and in consultation with the Pine Rest staff and volunteers, collected over a hundred items that will help tell their stories. The collected artifacts are cataloged individually in this database, while the photographs, documents, and other printed material are described in the finding aid for the Grand Rapids Public Museum's Archival Collection #229.
