World War II ➔ Set Of Anti-gas Eyeshields (6) In Original Cardboard Envelope

Identifier:
1999.90.1a-g
Description:
a) Rectangular brown cardboard envelope with black printing on it holds six pairs of plastic Anti-Gas Eyeshields. Front of envelope has three paper labels glued to front of it. b - g) 3 pairs of purple and 3 pairs of clear plastic eyeshields. Each pair is a flat, shaped piece of plastic with a snap bottom at each corner. There is a rectangular piece of cream felt stapled across top of one side of glasses and a shaped strip of coated green fabric on other. Green fabric has a snap top on each corner that corresponds to the snap on the plastic. These snap together to form a dimensional set of eyeshield. A blue elastic head strap is attached to each corner of the green fabric.;These eyeshields were made in Canada and used by all Allied troops during WWII. They were originally produced as anti-gas shields but were most often worn as dust and sand shields. These are rather hard to find now.;Sent to Museum unsolicited via US Mail.;There were three sets of six eyeshields sent, however, when eyeshields were removed from the envelopes it was found that many of them has melted and adhered to the paper separators inside the envelopes or had become so brittle that they started to disintegrate. Out of the orignal amount sent, 3 sets of clear plastic and 3 sets of purple plastic were in stable enough condition to keep.
