Description:
This quilted green bonnet has a ruffle at the neck and a yellow interior lining. There is a drawstring that runs along the entire front edge of the bonnet and the center back is tightly gathered in one spot. It was worn and owned by Zilpha Page in 1837. Outdoor bonnets were popular during this time period because they helped protect a woman's skin from the sun, leaving her complexion fashionably pale. Middle class women often owned at least two bonnets: one for warmer weather, usually made of straw, and one for colder weather such as this one. Bonnets for cold weather were usually made of heavier fabric and were quilted to help keep warm. This bonnet is an excellent example of what style of hat women wore during the winter in this time period.

Clothing has long been produced with natural materials and inspired by the beauty and diversity of the natural world, but the fashion industry has had a largely negative impact on the environment. This exhibit showcases a wide variety of captivating scientific specimens and fascinating garments, to illustrate their relationship to each other and their interconnected histories. Fashion + Nature aims to inspire and educate visitors, encouraging us to become better consumers and reduce the harmful impacts of the fashion industry.
