The four-side case is topped by scrolled broken pediments with turned vase finials. Each side has a circular window, but the clock face is only revealed on the front. The clock face is supported by fluted pilasters with modified Ionic Capitals. Pendulum and chimes are encased in the body behind 4-way beveled glass. The body is supported atop a cyma-curved plinth. Below the front face: Colonial Mfg., Co.
The clock is a major piece made by a local manufacturer.
Donated to Steketee's in 1917 by the department store's employees. It stood as a landmark fixture in the Steketee store for 81 years. It stood at the foot of the escalator near the candy counter until the store closed in April of 1998. It is now on display in the lobby of the former Steketee's building (currently Blue Cross Blue Shield).
Engraved on the plinth: PRESENTED TO PAUL STEKETEE & SONS BY THE EMPLOYEES AT DEDICATION OF EIGHT STORY MONROE AVENUE BUILDING APRIL 1917. |
