Description:

This 11-piece Pow Wow Grass Dance regalia was made by George Martin and Lorraine "Punkin" Shananaquet of the Gun Lake Tribe for Shananaquet 's son Paul, who wore it for the 1993-94 Pow Wow season. It consists of a satin shirt, yoke, apron, and pants of cotton, satin ribbon, and wool yarn. The arm cuffs are made of tanned hide, glass beads, horsehair, and copper; the anklets made of tanned hide with tin bells; the moccasins of tanned hide with glass beads; the neckerchief and tie of satin, tanned hide and glass beads; the headband of tanned hide and glass beads; and lastly the roach crafted by Martin, was made from dyed porcupine guard hair and whitetail deer hair.

Grass Dancing is a contemporary distillation of a traditional Pow Wow dance. Typically done by younger men, Grass Dancers beat down the tall grasses to form the Pow Wow dance circle.
