Irwin Uran (donor) Col. John Singleton Mosby (depicts) John Singleton Mosby, also known as "The Gray Ghost", was a Colonel in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He joined the war as a private and was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1962. In 1863 he was put in command of the 43rd Virginia Cavalry which became known as "Mosby's Rangers", famous for their lightning raids on Union supply lines. After the war, Mosby became a Republican and was a campaign manager and friend to Ulysses S. Grant. In 1878, Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him as the U. S. Consul to Hong Kong and he later worked for the Department of the Interior and as assistant Attorney General.
