The USS Grand Rapids PG98 was a gas turbine-powered Patrol Gunboat, commissioned by the U.S. Navy on November 15, 1970, and decommissioned on October 1, 1977. The USS Grand Rapids PG98 is the 14th gunboat of the Asheville Class, and the 2nd Navy ship to bear that name. The USS Grand Rapids never fired its weapons in combat, but spent most of its commissioned years in the Mediteranean Sea with its home port at Naples. After the USS Grand Rapids was decommissioned it became a US Naval Research Vessel and was renamed the Athena 2.
