Description:
This carte de visite shows J. C. Herkner seated in a chair. There is a two cent stamp affixed to the reverse side of the item. Herkner is shown in Civilian attire probably placing this photo 1864-1868 . He served in the Civil War with the 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics Regiment Company D first as a Lieutenant and later as Company Captain mustering out in 1865. Joseph was born in Germany in 1940 and returned to Grand Rapids after the war working as a Jeweler/Watch maker. ;Written in ink on reverse "J. C. Herkner - Capt. Co. D 1st Regt. Mich Engs"

Thank God for Michigan: Stories from the Civil War (June 6 2011 – March 29 2015)
Thank God for Michigan was an exhibition developed by the GRPM to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.  The exhibit featured over 150 artifacts from the GRPM's collection and told the story of the Civil War through the lens of soldiers and civilians from Michigan.
