Identifier:

Description:
This photograph, titled "Love in the Time of Coronavirus", shows Amy Lorraine's mother Elizabeth Joan McCarty doing the American Sign Language sign for "love". Elizabeth is a resident at Harvest Way Retirement Community in Sparta, Michigan and starting learning ASL and lip-reading when her hearing began to decline. She and her daughter are able to communicate those signs when her hearing aids aren't quite enough.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing homes and retirement communities have ceased visitations in order to protect their patients and residents. Amy has still been able to run her mother's errands but is required to leave all purchases at the door without being able to talk or hug her mother. After a recent trip to deliver groceries, Amy heard a knock on the door and turned to see what's photographed here: her mother saying she loves her.

This photograph was taken during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic, also known as COVID-19 which began in Wuhan, China on December 31st, 2019. Spreading to over 200 countries, it quickly became a dangerous and deadly disease, taking the lives of thousands.
