Description
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces and is the oldest continuous seagoing service in the United States. It was founded as the Revenue Marine in 1790 but became known as the United States Coast Guard in 1915. The USCG is a multi-mission service and has a maritime law enforcement mission as well as a federal regulatory agency mission as part of its mission set. It operates under the United States Department of Homeland Security during times of peace. The President of the United States can transfer it to the United States Department of the Navy at any time and the United States Congress can transfer it to the Department of the Navy during times of war. The coast guard is the smallest military branch of the United States Armed Forces but it is the world's 12th largest naval force.
